5. Vegetarian Tip: Due to differing national customs and practices, Japanese vegetarians generally tolerate ingredients such as onions, ginger, leeks, garlic, chili peppers, eggs, and milk, which differs from Chinese vegetarian practices. With the exception of Chinese restaurants run by overseas Chinese, most group meals in Japan primarily feature hot pot dishes made with vegetables, tofu, and other ingredients. For buffet meals in hotels or dining at regular restaurants, the menus tend to be less varied, with most dishes consisting of lettuce, pickles, and fruit accompanied by rice or noodles. Vegetarian travelers traveling to Japan are advised to prepare canned vegetarian food or instant noodles as a precaution.
