Hike the North Route of the Tamsui Historic Trail | Xiaocukeng Historic Trail. Explore the ruins of a gold rush settlement.

With mountains behind you and the sea in sight, journey from the mining pits to the bustling city of Jiufen! The Xiaocukeng Historic Trail is part of the northern route of the Danlan Historic Trail. Gold mining during the Japanese colonial era gave rise to the populous Xiaocukeng settlement. Along the way, you'll see the ruins of Xiaocukeng's houses and the remains of its primary school, nestled among moss and forest. As you head towards Jiufen, you'll enjoy a bird's-eye view of Jiufen and the coast. Not only is the scenery breathtaking, but you'll also be able to imagine the hustle and bustle of this historic trail.

The Xiaocukeng Historic Trail follows a route that follows A and exits B, covering approximately 10 kilometers. It begins at the Xiaocukeng Historic Trail Trailhead near the intersection of Houtong Elementary School and Ruihou Highway. Parts of the trail are stone steps and other sections are mossy rocks. The hiking route is clearly marked and easy to navigate.

The Xiaocukeng Historic Trail is located in Ruifang, New Taipei City. Starting from its starting point, the trail ascends past Cukeng Mountain. Along the way, you can see the remains of stone houses and buildings from the past. Upon reaching the highest point, the view opens up, offering a panoramic view of Keelung Mountain, Jiufen Mountain City, Shen'ao Cape, and even Keelung Island. This is a crucial section of the Tanlan Historic Trail North Route.

In the 1890s, Jiufen Old Street attracted as many as three to four thousand households seeking gold, creating a bustling and prosperous Jiufen settlement. However, with the decline of gold mining, the area gradually faded. Now, Jiufen Old Street and its abandoned mines, combined with its gold rush heritage and tourism, tell fascinating stories of history.
