Hualien Coast Dipit Revives Smoke-Free Tribe x Natural Ecological Observation x Lunch at Morikawa Rikai

Along the Hualien coastline, there lies a resilient group of people from the Dipit (Amis: snail) Fuxing Tribe, nestled midway up the mountain in Xinshe Village.

Eighteen years ago, a woman from the tribe, responding to the hopes of her grandparents, joined the elders in establishing the Hualien County Amis Community Development Association in the Fuxing Tribe, beginning the journey to develop a tribal industry.

Throughout this journey, they encountered numerous difficulties and challenges: labor shortages, skepticism, and epidemics... Their crops were frequently attacked by wild boars and monkeys, with nearly 70% of their crops eaten. Yet, they persevered and persevered!

Opportunities began to emerge, and with the help of numerous professional teams, schools, and organizations, they established Taiwan's first smoke-free tribe in 2006. In 2017, they established the Morikawa Rikai Platform, Taiwan's first platform encompassing public, academic, tribal, non-profit, and for-profit sectors.

With the influx of resources, they began various ecological surveys and discovered that a unique shrimp species in the tribal streams had increased in number thanks to the persistent conservation efforts of their elders. With the advice of some teachers, we reclaimed the Fuxing Terraces using friendly farming methods. From rice cultivation to the current planting of indigo, we've created a dual-blue experience that blends streams and indigo dyeing! Since then, we've experimented with more, developing our own products, such as vanilla tea and chive sausage, making the experience even more engaging for all five senses!
