Tour Overview

Visit Shirakawa-go, Gifu, a World Heritage Site, and admire the unique architectural landscape of Gassho Village

Stroll through the old streets of Takayama and enjoy the leisurely and slow pace of Japanese life

Enjoy the beauty of Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa over two days.

Departing from Nagoya, Japan, we journeyed to Shirakawa-go, Gifu. Here, you'll not only see the World Heritage-listed Gassho-style houses, but also, if you're lucky, witness the breathtaking scenery of falling snow. From the observatory, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the entire Gassho-style village, a scene that changes with the seasons. Strolling through the ancient streets of Takayama Old Town offers a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere, while also discovering traditional Japanese artifacts.

- Attraction Introduction -

▲Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go refers to the Sho River basin in Gifu Prefecture (Hida Province). In contrast to Shirakawa-go in Ono County and the former Shokawa-go, the former was known as "Shimo-Shirakawa-go" and the latter as "Kami-Shirakawa-go." Today, most people refer to Shirakawa-go only. The Ogimachi area of Shirakawa-go is famous for its Gassho-style houses.

The uniquely landscaped villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Ainokura and Suganuma areas) were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in December 1995 as the "Gassho-zukuri Settlements of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama."

▲ Gassho Village
The name "Gassho Village" comes from its architectural style. The gable-shaped roofs resemble two clasped hands, giving the houses their name "Gassho-zukuri" and the villages their name "Gassho Village." These villages are among the only ones in Japan to feature this type of house structure.

300 years ago, to adapt to the valley's natural environment, residents designed their wooden houses' roofs into equilateral triangles with 60-degree angles. This angle not only protects against cold winds but also allows the roofs to support heavy snow, allowing excess snow to naturally avalanche. This area, nestled in a region of heavy snow and nestled deep in the mountains, is isolated and often trapped by blizzards, cutting off access to the outside world. This has fostered unique customs and culture that have endured to this day, adding to its mystical beauty.

▲Takayama
Hida Takayama, reminiscent of its castle streets, is a town renowned for its rich history. Houses with Gassho-style architecture can be seen everywhere. The entire town is a tourist attraction. The Takayama Festival, held annually in spring and autumn, is considered one of Japan's three major festivals, alongside Kyoto's Gion Festival and Saitama's Chichibu Festival. Mikoshi (portable shrines) meticulously crafted by Hida artisans are paraded throughout the area. A visit to Takayama offers the opportunity to savor the charm of the ancient capital while immersing oneself in the art and culture of traditional artisans.

▲Kenrokuen
Kenrokuen is one of Japan's three most famous gardens, alongside Okayama's Korakuen Garden and Mito's Kairakuen Garden. Originally built in 1676 as the garden of the lord of Kanazawa Castle, it was renovated and expanded by successive lords, transforming it into a beautiful strolling garden in the style of a forest and spring. Kenrokuen Garden boasts six key features: grandeur, seclusion, human power, antiquity, springs, and panoramic views. Completed and open to the public in 1871, it features pavilions, terraces, towers, and pavilions. The winter-only snow-capped mountains offer a truly unique and unforgettable winter experience in Kanazawa.

▲Omicho Seafood Market

Located in the heart of Kanazawa City, Omicho Seafood Market boasts over 170 shops, primarily focused on fresh produce and daily necessities. Enjoy a wide selection of seafood from the Sea of Japan, all fresh and affordable, waiting to be savored!
