Spanning approximately 130,000 hectares, the Shirakami-Sanchi range straddles Aomori and Akita prefectures. One of the highlights is the Twelve Lakes. These 33 lakes are so named because 12 of them can be seen from Mount Daibeng. The most famous of these is the shimmering blue pond, the Blue Pond. Its transparency reaches a depth of 9 meters, yet it seems bottomless. Its color changes shades with the light and shadows, and at midday, direct sunlight casts a dazzling golden sheen on the surface, creating a breathtaking and dreamlike scene.

▲ Senjojiki Beach

A famous spot where the massive rock faces reflect the setting sun. Legend has it that long ago, the owner of Senjojiki Beach spread out 1,000 tatami mats and held a banquet there. The jagged rocks create a feeling of being transported to another planet. At dusk, the stunning silhouettes formed against the backdrop of the setting sun are renowned for their beauty, and have been selected as one of Japan's 100 best sunsets.
