- Attraction Introduction | Caoling Historic Trail Silvergrass Season -

▲ Caoling Historic Trail
The Caoling Historic Trail is part of the Danlan Historic Trail, a section of which is best known for its mountainous route from Yuanwangkeng in Gongliao District, New Taipei City, to Dali in Toucheng Town, Yilan County. The 8.5-kilometer route features two significant stone monuments along the way, making the "Caoling Historic Trail" famous. The Caoling Ancient Trail was built using Southern China road-building techniques. After being widened by the Japanese and redeveloped by various government agencies after the Restoration, the trail has become a popular hiking trail. From its highest point, visitors can admire Fulong Beach and Gongliao Mao'ao Bay, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape within minutes.

▲ Xiongzhen Manyan

This is a Class III national historic site. In the winter of 1867, during the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, General Liu Mingdeng visited the area, where shrouded in mist and clouds, making it difficult to find his way. General Liu Mingdeng inscribed the "Xiongzhen Manyan Stele" to subdue the mountain demon, preventing it from misleading travelers. This myth adds a touch of mystery to the trail.

▲ Tiger Stele

This is a Class III National Historic Site. It was inscribed by General Liu Mingdeng in the winter of 1867, the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty. The Tiger Stele is located at the pass of the ancient trail. The northeast monsoon blows particularly strongly through the pass. Liu Mingdeng, drawing inspiration from the I Ching saying, "Wind follows the tiger, clouds follow the dragon," used the character "tiger" to ward off the wind. Legend has it that there are male and female Tiger Stele monuments. Another Tiger Stele is currently housed at the Pinglin Tea Museum in Pinglin District, New Taipei City. Reaching the Tiger Stele signifies that you're not far from the highest point of the ancient trail!

▲ Pass

A pass (pronounced the same as "wu") is a naturally formed depression at the intersection of two mountains, known in geography as a "saddle." The site of the Tiger Stele is the "pass," facing the powerful northeast monsoon from northern Taiwan year-round. Only low-growing miscanthus and ground cover plants grow nearby. The pavilion here offers panoramic views of Guishan Island and the sea, making it a popular spot for resting and photographing along the Caoling Historic Trail.

▲ Dali Tiangong Temple
Regarded as the most scenic spot in Lanyang and a spiritual stronghold of the ancestors, Dali Tiangong Temple (also known as Qingyun Temple) is located along the Yilan County Coastal Highway. Backed by the lush greenery of Caoling Mountain and facing the vast blue Pacific Ocean, Guishan Island can be seen in the distance. The beautiful scenery and breathtaking views are complemented by the intricate architecture of the temple, creating a majestic atmosphere.
