Located in eastern Tottori Prefecture, the Tottori Sand Dunes stretch approximately 16 kilometers from east to west and 2.4 kilometers from north to south, they are the largest sand dunes in Japan. These are formed from volcanic ash that fell onto the Chiyo River, then pounded by the winds and waves of the Sea of Japan over 100,000 years of natural creation. The dunes range from depressions up to 40 meters deep to hills up to 50 meters high. There are patterns called wind ripples created by strong winds, and there are also curtains of sand sliding down the dune surface like an avalanche. The magnificent sand dunes are ever-changing and never stop.
