— Attraction Introduction | Takayama-Shirakawa-go Day Trip —

▲Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go refers to the Shokawa River basin in Gifu Prefecture (Hida Province). It was originally called "Shimoshirakawa-go" in contrast to Shirakawa Village in Ono District and the former "Kamishirakawa-go." Today, it usually refers only to Shirakawa Village. The Ogimachi area of Shirakawa-go is famous for its Gassho-zukuri houses.

The villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Aikura and Suganuma areas), with their unique landscapes, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage) in December 1995 under the name "Gassho-zukuri Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama."

▲Gassho-zukuri Village The name "Gassho-zukuri Village" comes from its architectural style. The gable roofs resemble two hands clasped together, hence the name "Gassho-zukuri" for the houses and the village itself. Only a few villages in Japan possess this unique architectural structure.

300 years ago, to adapt to the valley environment, the residents designed the roofs of their wooden houses into equilateral triangles with a 60-degree angle. This not only provides protection from the cold winds but also allows the roofs to withstand heavy snowfall while allowing excess snow to naturally avalanche. Located in a region prone to heavy snowfall, and nestled deep in the mountains, this area has historically been isolated by severe blizzards, cutting off access to the outside world. This isolation has fostered unique local customs and culture that persist to this day, adding to its mystique.

▲Takayama Hida Takayama, with its strong remnants of ancient castle streets, is a renowned town with a long history. Houses in the Gassho-style architectural style are ubiquitous. The entire town is a tourist destination, with the Takayama Festival, held annually in spring and autumn, considered one of Japan's three major festivals (along with Kyoto's Gion Festival and Saitama's Chichibu Festival). Crafted portable shrines, meticulously made by Hida artisans, are displayed throughout the town. A visit to Takayama offers the chance to experience the charm of an ancient capital while appreciating the art and culture created by traditional craftsmen.
