Located in the valley of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps), Kamikochi was once a dammed lake formed by the eruption of Shirataniyama, part of the Yakedake volcanic group, from the Azusa River. Subsequently, earth and rock gradually accumulated, forming an accumulation plain stretching approximately 10 kilometers long from Taisho Pond to Yokoo, with a maximum width of approximately 1 kilometer. More narrowly, it refers to the area surrounding the famous tourist attraction Kappa Bridge. This is a rare example of flat land at medium to high altitudes in Japan.

The area lies at the junction of deciduous broadleaf forest and subalpine coniferous forest, boasting diverse tree species such as Japanese beech, mizunara, eastern linden, Nikko fir, Webster fir, and fish-scale spruce. Riverine forests and wetlands, including willows and Japanese larch, also feature, creating a rich vegetation landscape. During the last glacial period, mountain glaciers developed above Kamikochi's Hanaze and Kuzawa, reaching as far as Yokoo, the deepest point of Kamikochi. The area has a humid subarctic climate (tundra in some areas). The average January temperature is only -7.7°C, with lows reaching -30°C. Meanwhile, the average August temperature is 19.7°C, with daytime temperatures reaching 22°C. However, the highest monthly average temperature in some areas falls below 10°C.

If you do not order a bento, please bring your own meal or purchase it at a rest stop along the way.
There are also restaurants and cafeterias in the area, but please be aware that lunchtime is expected to be very busy.
