— Attraction Introduction | One-Day Tour of Kamikochi, Nagano —

▲ Kamikochi Kamikochi is located in the valley of the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps). It was originally a barrier lake formed by lava flows from the Azusa River caused by the eruption of Mount Shiratani in the Yaedake volcanic group. Gradually, soil and rocks accumulated, forming a landslide plain approximately 10 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, stretching from Taisho Pond to Yokoo. In a narrower sense, it refers to the area around the famous Kappa Bridge. It is a rare mid-to-high altitude flat area in Japan.

Located at the boundary between deciduous broad-leaved forests and subalpine coniferous forests, this area boasts a rich diversity of tree species, including Japanese kaki, mizunara, East Asian linden, sunflower fir, Wesleyan fir, and spruce. It also features river forests and wetlands with willows and Japanese larch, resulting in exceptionally abundant vegetation. During the Last Glacial Period, the areas above Kamikochi, including Yamazawa and Kakeruzawa, had well-developed mountain glaciers, which at their peak reached Yokoo, the deepest point in Kamikochi. The local climate is subarctic humid (with some areas exhibiting tundra climate). The average January temperature is only -7.7°C, with lows reaching as low as -30°C. Conversely, the average August temperature is 19.7°C, with daytime temperatures reaching 22°C. However, some areas experience average highs below 10°C.

▲Kamikochi Kamikochi is a popular tourist destination and summer resort located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the southern part of the Hida Mountains in western Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The elevation is approximately 1,500 meters. The entire area belongs to Matsumoto City and is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, designated a National Cultural Property (Special Site of Scenic Beauty, Special Natural Monument). It features hot springs and serves as a base for climbing Mount Hotaka and Mount Yagami. The name Kamikochi comes from the hiragana "kamikouchi" (神垣内), which refers to the descent of the deity "Hotaka no Mikoto" (穗高見命) to Mount Hotaka, where a ritual was performed at the Okugura and Myojin Pond of Hotaka Shrine. To protect the natural environment, private vehicles are not allowed on the site.

▲Taisho Pond Taisho Pond is a volcanic lake formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Yagami in 1915. The "dead trees" (枯立木) in the lake present different dreamlike scenes depending on the season and time of day.

▲Tashiro Pond
Tashiro Pond is a shallow wetland, where the fresh greenery in May, the golden leaves in October, and the thin ice in late autumn create breathtaking scenery.

▲Kappa Bridge
Kappa Bridge is the most iconic spot in Kamikochi, a 5-minute walk from the bus terminal. From the bridge, you can see the Hodaka mountain range, Mount Yagami, and the surface of the Azusa River. During the May holidays, summer vacation, and autumn foliage season, it attracts many tourists from both Japan and abroad.

▲Myojin Pond
It takes about 60 minutes to walk from Kappa Bridge along the upper reaches of the Azusa River to Myojin Pond. This area is considered the sacred ground of the inner shrine of Hodaka Shrine. Various wild plants and birds create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for immersing oneself in nature's embrace. The view of Mount Myojin from Myojin Bridge is also spectacular, attracting many photography enthusiasts.

▲Toho Hotaka
The Hodaka mountain range can be seen from various spots in Kamikochi, making it an indispensable part of the area. Okuho-Takadake is Japan's third highest peak. It is known as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, one of the "New 100 Famous Mountains of Japan," and one of the "100 Famous Mountains of Flowers."

▲Yakedake Yakedake, at 2455 meters, is the only active volcano in the Japanese Northern Alps. The sight of smoke swirling in the blue sky is truly beautiful.
