▲ Uji Byodo-in Temple
With over a thousand years of history, Byodo-in Temple remains as charming and beautiful as ever. When it comes to Uji, Byodo-in Temple is the epitome of this region. Built around 1053 during the Heian period, Byodo-in Temple was a symbol of the wealth of the then-regent Fujiwara no Yama. Its grandeur can still be felt today, from the clear pool reflecting the Phoenix Hall, to the vermilion-painted Byodo-in Temple itself, to the most celebrated golden phoenix pointing toward the Western Paradise. The buildings, ranging from simple to opulent, each detail imbues the temple with a distinct charm distinct from the many shrines and temples in Kyoto. Let's find the phoenix on the 10,000 yen quilt!

▲Uji Shrine

Sitting on the shores of the Uji River, Uji Shrine is filled with greenery. Legend has it that once, the ancient prince Umichi Wararouko was lost when a rabbit appeared, repeatedly looking back and stopping to guide him. This adorable rabbit was considered a divine messenger, and from then on, it symbolized guiding people toward the right values and path, becoming a guide. The rabbit fortune sticks sold at the shrine are particularly popular among women.

▲Sen'yū-ji Temple
Legend has it that after Yang Guifei's death, Emperor Minghuang of Tang had a life-size seated statue of Guanyin carved in her likeness. This statue, which was brought to this temple in 1230, is the "Yang Guifei Guanyin Bodhisattva Statue" currently enshrined at Sen'yū-ji Temple. This has made this temple a popular destination for seeking marriage and seeking to become an elegant and beautiful woman, making it one of the few temples in Japan that pray for beauty.

▲Shoju-in Temple
This temple is a favorite among young women in Japan. Its heart-shaped doors and windows are a popular photo spot. The ceiling is decorated with "inari-moku masonry," each painted by artists from across Japan. The setting sun creates a romantic atmosphere against the heart-shaped windows. Transportation is difficult, requiring a shuttle bus from Daisei. Chartering a car is the most convenient way to visit, and renting a car is a popular method of travel for many Japanese visitors.
