– About the Attractions | Spring Kyoto Cherry Blossom Day Tour –

▲Arashiyama

Located west of Kyoto, Arashiyama has been the site of many aristocratic villas since the Heian Period, and its name frequently appears in historical stories and classical literature. The Katsura Riverbanks boast extensive wild cherry blossoms and maple forests every spring and autumn, making it a long-standing tourist destination.

The entire Arashiyama area is centered around Togetsukyo Bridge, spanning the Katsura River. The bridge's name derives from a line in a poem by Emperor Kameyama: "It's like a full moon passing over the bridge." While it appears to be a wooden bridge, today's Togetsukyo Bridge is a modern reinforced concrete structure suitable for vehicles, with retro wooden railings to complement the surrounding scenery.

▲ Nanzenji Temple

Nanzenji Temple holds the highest status among all Japanese Zen temples, ranked above the Five Mountains of Kyoto and Kamakura, enjoying special status. It is also a center of Five Mountains literature, and its successive abbots have been among the most distinguished Zen monks of their time, holding significant positions in Japanese cultural history.

Beyond its lofty status, the temple boasts numerous scenic attractions, including the Sanmon Gate, a historically significant garan (the name for a Zen temple in Japan), featured in kabuki performances, and numerous historically significant garans. It also boasts magnificent Japanese sliding door paintings and the beautiful Hojo Garden (the abbot's residence). Nearly all the essence of a Japanese Zen temple can be seen here.

▲Nijo Castle

Among Kyoto's World Heritage sites, Nijo Castle is the only one that isn't a shrine or temple. A famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, it's illuminated for a limited time in spring, and the gardens, with 200 cherry trees in full bloom, create a unique atmosphere.

The Seiryu-en Garden and the Outer Castle Garden within the grounds offer a unique horticultural experience, each viewed from a different angle and highly acclaimed worldwide. The area also features a pedestrian street, souvenir shops, and rest areas, making it a great place to relax while exploring Kyoto.

▲Philosopher's Path

A walking path stretching approximately 2 kilometers along the flowing water runs from Ginkaku-ji Temple in the north to Wakaoji Shrine in the south. The whispering sound of water and the 450 cherry trees known as "Kansetsukura" ("Kansettsukura") line the path.

During the Meiji era, many literati resided here, earning it the nickname "Benmin-no-Michi." Later, due to the walks of Kyoto School philosophers such as Kitaro Nishida and Gen Tanabe, it became known as the "Philosopher's Path." The Philosopher's Path is surrounded by numerous cafes, delicious restaurants, and charming souvenir shops, making it a perfect walking path for Kyoto sightseeing.
