- About the Attraction | Asahiyama Zoo + Abashiri Drift Ice Two-Day Tour-

▲Monbetsu Garinko II

The Garinko, built by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and equipped with a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine, is the successor to the world's first drift ice-breaking sightseeing ship, the Garinko I. Two augers are located at the bow of the ship. When encountering drift ice, they use the drills to break through the massive ice floes, allowing for a soothing sight of large ice blocks being crushed from the bow. There's also a souvenir shop on board, offering hot drinks and snacks, allowing you to enjoy the drift ice in comfort before heading to the drift ice rocking area at the bow.

Located at the northernmost tip of Japan, this zoo is the most visited and voted the most popular in Japan. Asahiyama Zoo emphasizes the concept of animal-centered design, preserving the animals' natural and pristine living environments and providing spaces where visitors can observe their lives up close. The penguin walk show, held annually in winter, is a highlight of Hokkaido tourism.

The Okhotsk Seal Center in Monbetsu takes in many injured seals, providing them with a safe and comfortable home while they recover. It's also open to the public, allowing visitors to observe these adorable seals up close, rarely seen otherwise. Five feeding shows are held daily, making it Monbetsu's most famous attraction, aside from the drift ice.

▲Abashiri Icebreaker Aurora

This icebreaker, available only in Abashiri, Hokkaido, departs from January to March each year. Fresh water flowing from the Songhua River into the Sea of Okhotsk, driven by the cold winds of the Siberian Current, forms drift ice on the surface. Aboard the icebreaker Aurora, you can enjoy this magnificent winter spectacle while sailing across the Sea of Okhotsk.
