▲Goryokaku Park
Goryokaku Park, a historical site steeped in the history of the late Edo period, offers breathtaking views of the star-shaped landscape cut through by the moat. Goryokaku is a Western-style fortress built approximately 150 years ago. Approximately 1,600 cherry trees line the moat, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Hokkaido every spring. The vibrant green leaves of summer, the crimson autumn leaves, and the white snow of winter create a vibrant, serene landscape, creating a vibrant scene year-round.

Hakodate is home to numerous churches, and both the men's and women's convents are popular with tourists. The Trappistinu Monastery is Hakodate's oldest women's convent. In 1898, eight French nuns were sent to Hakodate to preach the gospel. Today, more than a dozen Trappist nuns still live there.

▲ Seikan Link Ship Memorial Museum Mashu Maru

In the days before the Seikan Tunnel, goods, vehicles, and people traveled between Hakodate and Aomori via the Seikan Link Ship. With the opening of the Seikan Tunnel and the railway in 1988, the Seikan Link Ship was officially retired. The Mashu Maru was converted into the Seikan Link Ship Memorial Museum, moored at Hakodate Pier next to the Hakodate Morning Market and open to visitors.

Although Sakamoto Ryoma, known as the founding father of Japan, died young, he dedicated his life to Japan and its advancement towards modern times. Interestingly, Sakamoto Ryoma never actually visited Hokkaido, but he mentioned his interest in exploring the island in letters to friends. Later, an eighth-generation descendant of Sakamoto Ryoma actually visited Hokkaido, leading to the creation of this memorial museum.
