Hakone, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is a renowned hot spring resort centered around the volcanic crater of Lake Ashi. If you're in Hakone, don't miss Japan's highest freshwater aquarium, Hakone-en Aquarium. Perched 723 meters above sea level, it overlooks Lake Ashi and is connected to the Komagatake Ropeway. A 7-minute ride takes you to the summit of Komagatake, where you can enjoy fresh air and panoramic views of Mount Fuji. Hakone-en Aquarium boasts 32,000 fish from 450 species. Using newly developed aquaculture water, Hakone-en Aquarium is the first aquarium in Japan to exhibit a water environment that is adapted to the environment.

Hakone-en Aquarium consists of three buildings: the Baikal Seal Plaza, the Seawater Pavilion, and the Freshwater Pavilion. At the Baikal Seal Plaza, you can observe Baikal seals from Russia's Lake Baikal from the deck. These are the world's only remaining freshwater seals. The seal show features a variety of humorous and captivating performances. Besides catching plates and jumping through water rings, you can also see seals enjoying a hot spring bath, holding a wooden basin filled with sake and wearing a towel on their heads. This clever and adorable show is a favorite at Hakone-en Aquarium. The Seawater Tank features sharks, rays, king penguins, and king crabs. In the center of the aquarium, a large, open tank bathed in natural light stands seven meters tall and holds 1,255 tons of seawater. Watch a variety of marine fish swim lively within the tank. The tank also hosts frequent seawater shows, where divers can feed the fish. In the Freshwater Tank, fish from the Amazon River, such as electric eels and piranhas, can be seen, along with a variety of rare fish from Lake Ashi and the caves.
