▲ Trappistinu Monastery

Hakodate is home to numerous churches, both the men's and women's convents, which attract many visitors. The Trappistinu Monastery is Hakodate's oldest women's convent. In 1898, eight French nuns were sent to Hakodate to preach the Gospels. Today, over a dozen Trappist nuns still live at the convent.

Goryokaku Park, a historical site steeped in the history of the late Edo period, offers breathtaking views from the observation deck of the newly renovated Goryokaku Tower, showcasing the captivating star-shaped landscape cut by the moat. Goryokaku is a Western-style fortress built approximately 150 years ago. Approximately 1,600 cherry trees line the moat, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Hokkaido every spring. The vibrant green leaves of summer, the crimson autumn maple leaves, and the white snow of winter create a vibrant scene, creating a vibrant scene year-round.

This building, built in 1910 using Chinese architectural techniques in the style of a Guandi Temple, served as a trade and conference center for overseas Chinese. It commemorates Guan Yu, a military commander from the Three Kingdoms period. The interior is currently closed to visitors; only the exterior is accessible.

▲ Foreigners' Cemetery
Originally, this was the burial ground for sailors who died fighting alongside General Perry in Hakodate. Later, foreigners who died while living in Hakodate are also buried here, as are Japanese Catholics and Christians. Cemeteries are divided according to ethnicity and religious beliefs.
