・Nosuke Peninsula | Japan's Largest Sea Ice Field

The Nosuke Peninsula is an eclipse-shaped peninsula located between Betsukai Town and Shibetsu Town, northwest of Nemuro City. It is popular for its vast expanse of vastness and cold winters, creating a feeling of reaching the end of the world. The vastness and sheer size of the ice field also allow for the "ice horizon," a phenomenon rarely seen even in Europe. "Nosuke" means "jaw" in the language of the Ainu people, Hokkaido's indigenous people, suggesting the peninsula's shape resembles a whale's jaw. Legend has it that a large whale died and drifted here, its jaw forming the Nosuke Peninsula and nurturing the land. This legend and scenery imbue the area with a sense of "the end."

Nosuke Bay and Odai-numa, the inner reaches of the Nosuke Peninsula, were designated as Ramsar wetlands in 2005. Home to approximately 250 species of wild birds, including white-tailed eagles, Steller's sea eagles, and whooper swans, this natural zoo deserves everyone's support.

Lake Mashu | Water of the Gods
Mashu, meaning "Water of the Gods" in the language of the Ainu people, Hokkaido's indigenous inhabitants, is a dammed lake formed by the eruption of Mount Akan. It is one of the three great lakes of Eastern Hokkaido. Its surface remains calm year-round, its waters as clear as a mirror. Its transparency once reached a record high of 41.6 centimeters, making it the clearest lake in Japan and the second-clearest in the world. Its high mountain location makes the sky's reflection appear even more azure on clear days, earning it the nickname "Mashu Blue."

Lake Akan
Lake Akan National Park, one of Eastern Hokkaido's three great lakes, is renowned for its abundance of marula and trout. Its clear waters and scenic beauty are renowned, and Lake Akan Onsen is located on its south shore. Mornings offer the rare opportunity to witness the lake's "frost flowers." The area is home to numerous shops and restaurants, including the Ainu Village, a traditional village of the indigenous Ainu people. It is a popular tourist destination for all ages, making it a popular destination for travelers of all ages.
