Tour Overview

What I'm walking on is not snow, but ice, strolling along the "Ice Horizon" of Notsuke Peninsula!

Watching Russia from the Notsuke Peninsula at the end of the world

The bus provides multiple shuttle services, so you don't have to wait for the bus in the heavy snow. It's very considerate.

Let's travel together to Hokkaido in winter, exploring the end of the world—Notsuke Peninsula—and see Russia from Hokkaido! Join the "Ice Horizon Walk" tour, departing from Utoro Onsen, passing Notsuke Peninsula, and finally reaching Lake Akan Onsen. Escape the dreariness of waiting for buses and carrying luggage in the cold! Enjoy the beauty of the snowy land from a warm bus. The Eastern Hokkaido Express Bus offers multiple pick-up and drop-off locations, and through hotel partnerships, you can save even more money on your trip. Experienced guides will also teach you tips on taking advantage of distant and near-visited scenery and creating photo illusions. The Eastern Hokkaido Express Bus allows you to explore eastern Hokkaido in comfort and warmth, without the risk of driving in heavy snow or waiting for the infrequent Eastern Hokkaido Electric Railway. Have you ever missed out on the beauty of eastern Hokkaido due to transportation, instead wandering around Sapporo and Hakodate? When chatting with friends and family, you might feel a little lost because everyone's heading to the same places. Quba's winter trip to Eastern Hokkaido will take you beyond the borders of Japan's inaccessible snow country, allowing you to take incredible photos and become a pioneer, exploring your own travel territory and adding a new pin!

- About the Itinerary | Nosuke Peninsula. A Stroll to the End of the World -

▲Nosuke Peninsula
The Nosuke Peninsula is an edible-shaped peninsula located northwest of Nemuro City, between Betsukai Town and Shibetsu Town. It's popular for its vast expanse of white, cold, and desolate winters, creating a feeling of being at the end of the world. The vast expanse of the ice sheet also allows for a "ice horizon" rarely seen even in Europe. "Nosuke" means "lower jaw" in the language of the Ainu people, Hokkaido's indigenous people, suggesting the peninsula's shape resembles a whale's jaw. Legend has it that a large whale died and drifted here, its jaw forming the Nosuke Peninsula and nurturing the land. Its legend and scenery imbue this land with a sense of "the end." Notsuke Bay and Odai-numa, located on the inner side of the Notsuke Peninsula, were designated a Ramsar Wetland Site in 2005. Home to approximately 250 species of wild birds, including white-tailed eagles, Steller's sea eagles, and whooper swans, this area is a truly natural zoo that deserves everyone's support.

▲ Shrimp-Shaped Sandbar

The Shrimp-Shaped Sandbar, known for its poignant beauty, was formed by the sediment discharged from the Shibetsu River, which drifted along the sea. Its unusual shape, resembling a "bent-backed prawn," stretches approximately 28 kilometers across grasslands and wetlands, making it Japan's largest branching sandbar. Within this wetland lies a vast forest of dead fir trees. Years of seawater erosion and strong winds have twisted and deformed the trees, creating a unique appearance.
