- Route Introduction | Beidawu Mountain Hiking Itinerary

▲ Beidawu Mountain
Beidawu Mountain is the highest peak in the southern section of the Central Mountain Range, one of Taiwan's Five Sacred Mountains, and the only peak in southern Taiwan exceeding 3,000 meters. Known as the "Barrier of Southern Taiwan," it is also known as the "Sacred Mountain of the Southern Frontier" because it is sacred to the Rukai and Paiwan peoples. It boasts the largest area of primary forest in Taiwan and is rich in biological resources. The elevation gain is approximately 1,549 meters. Besides the continuous uphill climb, there are also some dangerous terrain, such as landslides, making the hike quite challenging. Please carefully consider your physical fitness and experience.

Beidawu Mountain's three most captivating sights are sunrise, sea of clouds, and hemlock trees. The early morning sunrise is like the rebirth of the earth, full of vitality and hope. The majestic sea of clouds near midday allows one to experience the grandeur and immensity of nature. The hemlock trees perched high on the mountain are like long-standing guardians of Beidawu Mountain, adding a touch of sacredness to this sacred mountain.

▲ Dawu Shrine

Also known as the Dawu Ruins, the shrine and the Chuling Pagoda, built by the Japanese government to commemorate the Japanese soldiers who died in the Pearl Harbor attack, are the largest and most complete alpine shrine ruins. Paiwan elders believe this place is closest to their ancestral spirits.

Dawu Sacred Tree

At Beidawu Mountain, you can admire the diverse forest zones of four major forest zones: subtropical broadleaf forest, warm temperate broadleaf forest, warm temperate coniferous forest, and cool temperate coniferous forest. After 6.5 kilometers, a pure forest of hemlock trees rises tall and majestic, with trees so large that two or three people are often seen hugging them. At approximately 5.3 kilometers, a massive red cypress tree, over 1,000 years old, stands. Hikers call it the Dawu Sacred Tree. Standing approximately 25 meters tall and with a girth of 11.7 meters, it exudes a majestic presence.
