Formed by the force of the Earth's crust, this sandbar is known as Tango's Amanohashidate, and is one of the Three Scenic Spots of Japan, along with Itsukushima in Hiroshima and Matsushima in Miyagi. The name "Amanohashidate" is said to derive from the fact that if one stands on the higher hilltops of Kasamatsu Park at the northern end of the sandbar or Hiryukan at the southern end, with their backs to the sandbar and looking down from their crotch, they will see the sandbar stretching diagonally towards the sky.
