▲Goryokaku Park
Goryokaku Park is not only a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot, but also a historical site. If you enjoy cherry blossoms and are a fan of the history of the late Bakumatsu period, Goryokaku Park is a must-see. Goryokaku, located in Hakodate, was built in the late Edo period and abandoned after the shogunate ended. It was the site of the final battle of the Boshin War. Hijikata Toshizo, known as the "Demon Vice-Captain" of the Shinsengumi, also died there. The Republic of Ezo was founded and died here. Goryokaku Park boasts 1,600 different varieties of pink cherry blossoms. The most striking feature is the star-shaped formation of blossoms seen from the tower, a truly unique sight. Goryokaku Park offers not only a breathtaking display of cherry blossoms in bloom but also a chance to savor the charm of history.

▲ Matsumae Park

Located in Matsumae Town, at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, Matsumae Park offers magnificent views of the Tsugaru Strait. Once home to the Matsumae Domain, it served as a trading capital connecting Ezo and Honshu, and was also Hokkaido's only castle town. Matsumae Castle is Hokkaido's only castle and the last Japanese-style castle built during the Edo period. Matsumae Castle was destroyed by fire in 1949. The current castle tower was rebuilt with donations from the people of Hokkaido. Its interior houses the Matsumae Domain History Museum. The Honmaru Palace has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. The ruins of Matsumae Castle, home to the Honmaru Palace, have been renovated into Matsumae Park. Selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous cherry blossom viewing spots, Matsumae Park boasts approximately 10,000 cherry trees of 250 varieties, which bloom in sequence from late April to mid-May each year. Combined with the unique historical charm of the temple town, the interplay of the ancient castle and the cherry blossoms creates a scene reminiscent of a Taiga drama.
