Tour Overview

One-hour nighttime rainforest walk, introducing the rainforest ecology and blue light worm ecology

After departure from the hotel, head directly to the national park

After leaving the rainforest and enjoying hot tea and coffee, we will go to the night to see the constellations, the Milky Way, and the Southern Cross, which is only visible in the Southern Hemisphere (may be subject to weather conditions).

Springbrook National Park on the Gold Coast is part of the East Coast Rainforest Reserve, a significant Australian World Heritage site. The reserve is divided into three areas: Springbrook Plateau, Natural Bridge, and Mount Cougal. Today, we'll introduce one of the Gold Coast's most captivating natural wonders: the inhabitants of Natural Bridge—the blue light worms.

Natural Bridge is a natural cave formed by the erosion of rock by waterfalls. Over time, the bridge has taken shape, earning it the name "Natural Bridge." This cave is a favorite habitat for blue light worms, which can only survive in specific environments: dark, humid conditions, ample food sources, and a rock face to cling to, such as a cave. Glowworms are quite different from the fireflies we're familiar with. While typical fireflies glow to attract mates, glowworms glow in the dark when hungry, attracting prey. The hungrier they get, the brighter they become. Furthermore, they lack flight. What we see inside the glowworm cave is the larval stage, as the adult life cycle lasts approximately four days, during which time they primarily reproduce. Currently, glowworms can only be seen at Natural Bridge on Australia's Gold Coast, Waitomo Glowworm Cave on New Zealand's North Island, and Te Anau on New Zealand's South Island.

The scientific name for the Natural Bridge glowworm is Arachnocampa flava, while the scientific name for the New Zealand glowworm is Arachnocampa Luminosa. If you're lucky, you might even spot the mysterious glowing mushrooms (Mycena chlorophos) that appear after a heavy rain.

During your visit, please be aware that you must never shine light on these unique glowworms. They are extremely sensitive to light. Direct exposure to light will cause them to go dormant, and it will take several hours for them to regain their normal brightness. During this time, they lose their ability to attract prey and can easily starve to death. Therefore, you'll find warnings throughout the national park to protect the glowworms. Doing so will result in severe penalties.

The beautiful glowworms resemble tiny stars in the night sky. A sky filled with them resembles a dazzling array of starlight, creating a spectacular spectacle that feels like being in the midst of a blue Milky Way. What an unforgettable visual experience!
