Tour Overview
Since the Heian Period, the Arashiyama area has been a favorite destination for many Kyoto nobles seeking villas. Renowned for its stunning scenery, Arashiyama boasts crimson autumn leaves blanketing the mountaintops, winter blanketed in white snow, and spring's vibrant pink cherry blossoms blanketing the mountains. It's a renowned spot in Japan for both autumn and cherry blossom viewing.
Today, join the fun-loving experts on a journey through Arashiyama's scenery!
In addition to its natural beauty, Arashiyama is also home to many renowned shrines, the most significant of which is Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally encompassing the entire Arashiyama area, it was rebuilt to its present-day beauty during the Meiji Period after enduring wartime. Notably, the Sogen Pond, designed by the founding abbot, Muso Soseki, survived the war and remains a truly historic site.
The bamboo forest path next to Tenryu-ji Temple was a famous filming location for the film "Memoirs of a Geisha." The path, lined with towering green bamboos, is an elegant sight beloved by travelers from all over the world. A stroll through it brings time and space to a standstill.
Nearby, Jojakko-ji Temple is a renowned spot for autumn foliage viewing, offering panoramic views of Sagano and Kyoto.
In summer and autumn, the mountains are covered in a riot of green, yellow, and red maple leaves, complemented by the quaint architecture of the temple grounds, creating a tranquil and elegant Japanese atmosphere.
Next to Tenryu-ji Temple, Togetsukyo Bridge crosses the Katsura River. Standing atop the bridge, gazing at the slowly approaching yakatabune boats, the contrasting scenery with the distant mountaintops creates a poetic and picturesque scene.
The finale of the trip is a delicious culinary experience aboard a yakatabune. If standing on a bridge offers a picturesque view of Arashiyama, then aboard a Yakatabune is a feast for both the eyes and the senses! Enjoy a delicious lunch as you savor the Arashiyama scenery you've explored this morning.
