According to locals, during the Japanese colonial period, the average paddy field yielded only 40 to 50 dan of millet per hectare, while the rice paddies in this area could produce 60 dan of millet per hectare, hence the name "Sixty-Dan Mountain." Another theory is that during the Japanese colonial period, this mountainous area was once a lush camphor forest, but it was cleared to make camphor. Sixty large stones were discovered scattered across the bare hillside, giving the area its name.
Chih-Ke Mountain, located in the Coastal Mountains at an altitude of approximately 800 to 1,200 meters, is Taiwan's primary and largest daylily cultivation area. July and August are crucial harvest seasons for daylilies. Farmers harvest according to their daily growth. If harvested too late, the flowers will have already bloomed and become unusable. Therefore, during the Hualien daylily season in August and September every year, you will see the entire hill covered with a sea of yellow daylilies, and the pastoral scenery will make you feel like you are in Switzerland.
Taimali Daylily Mountain is famous for its blossoms, including cherry blossoms from January to February, wild lilies from March to April, hydrangeas from May to July, Taitung daylilies from August to October, and apricot blossoms from November to December. The summer daylily season is undoubtedly the most famous. The flowers bloom for a very short time, earning them the nickname "One-Day Beauty." A sea of orange flowers blooms, covering the hilltops like a beautiful garment covering the earth, a beauty beyond measure.
