For beginners, the National Forest Recreation Area features specially designed, friendly trails. Taiwan's century-long forestry development is closely tied to forestry railway transportation. The Alishan Forestry Railway, built during the peak of global railway technology, features four key features: a zigzag, U-turn, and spiral climbing route, along with a unique upright Shay-style steam locomotive. It is Taiwan's only remaining forestry railway and the first National Important Cultural Landscape designated by the Ministry of Culture.
